It is is one of three works I painted over the course of a week, in a state of hyperfocus. They all came spontaneously, employing similar color palettes and expressive marks.

I often find my work draws on the landscape without my consciously intending it. I guess I’m a collector of forms. These seem to hang out in the furthest reaches of my mind until I’m painting, and they then emerge without prompting onto the canvas.

The dark greys a blacks in this work allow the bright colors to sign. Flowing lines draw the eye around the canvas. The idea of the river in the title comes from the undulating blue form which cuts across the piece, suggestive of the way water shapes our landscape. As is usually the case in my abstract works, I built the piece up in layers. The earlier compositional elements peek through, adding interest and inviting the viewer to trace the artistic process.
